The Tribe Mapping Technique
Have you ever heard the sentence “You are the sum of the five people you surround yourself with?”
It’s catchy, it’s triggering and…it’s wrong.
The idea that we are just the sum of our friends is a radical oversimplification, one of the key intentions of The Home Therapist is to emphasize that the game of life is multi-dimensional. It’s not just your friends who shape you, it’s also the friends of your friends, your coworkers, your family, the people at your gym, your teachers, kids…
Human beings are social creatures, each and every individual repre- sents a system of people who influence your decisions, the way you talk, the way you think and the way you behave.
Think of an apple tree, the quality of fruit that this tree is producing is highly influenced by external factors such as sunlight, soil, wind, rain and else. If the environment of an apple tree becomes corrupted and infertile, the tree dies.
The good news is that you are not an apple tree (duh) and you can take control and change your environment.
Just as a tree would eliminate sources of pollution and pests if he could, you must investigate what’s rotten around you and move away from people and situations that bring you down.
In the following exercise, you are going to deconstruct your human environment, your tribe, in order to get a clearer picture about the origins of your results.
